Vol. 138 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Airport Customs and Excise Duties.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the amount of revenue collected in the present financial year from passengers arriving at Dublin airport as duty on the importation of dutiable articles imported by them at the time of theirarrival and (2) the amount of salaries paid to the customs and excise staff engaged in that duty during the same period.

It is not possible to segregate the proportion of staff salaries attributable only to the examination of incoming passengers' baggage.

The amount of revenue collected in the period from 1st April. 1953, to 8th May, 1953, inclusive, from passengers arriving at Dublin airport as duty on the importation of dutiable articles imported by them at the time of arrival was £119. The officers engaged on this work have other duties to perform, for example, in connection with the importation and exportation of merchandise at the airport. For the period indicated the remuneration payable to revenue staff at the airport was approximately £1,171. The duty receivable in respect of goods imported in that period (including the £119 already mentioned) amounted to £14,527.
