Vol. 139 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Postal Arrangements.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state the relevant times at which letters require or required to be posted at the General Post Office, Dublin, to catch the cross-Channel mails (a) now that such mails are sent by air, and (b) when such mails were formerly sent by surface.

The posting times were not altered when air conveyance of mails to Great Britain was introduced in March, 1951, but the mails now obtain considerably earlier delivery than when the surface service only was being used.

I appreciate that the mails are delivered earlier, but is there not some possibility of making an arrangement that if letters cannot be posted by 6 p.m., which I understand is the present hour, they could be sent by the letter surface mail? Is the Minister not aware that the present position is that if they are not posted in the G.P.O. by 6 o'clock, they wait until the next day?

The times were not altered, so I suppose the conditions were not altered.

There was an arrangement for late posting in the case of surface mail.
