Vol. 139 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Ex-Servicemen.

asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself that priority is given to national ex-servicemen for any suitable vacancies that may occur for State employment.

Emergency ex-servicemen, together with men from certain other emergency organisations, receive special consideration in connection with the filling of suitable vacancies for State employment. As far as I am aware, this is being done.

If an ex-serviceman is in receipt of a pension, does that preclude him from procuring employment or not?

No, not that I am aware of.

If I bring several cases to the Minister's notice will he give that his attention?

There are numerous ex-servicemen who cannot find suitable types of employment. That would not depend on whether they had pensions or not. It might depend on the fact, perhaps, that there were other applicants before them.

If a vacancy exists, does the fact that an applicant is drawing a pension preclude him from procuring employment, provided somebody else, who is not an ex-serviceman and who is not getting a pension, gets priority?

Ex-servicemen, as far as possible, get priority.
