Vol. 226 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Financial Position of Teaching Orders.

151.

asked the Minister for Education if his attention has been directed to a statement made recently by the head of a reputable college to the effect that most teaching orders are in debt; if he will take steps to examine sympathetically the case of any educational establishment which is in debt because of its work; and if as part of his educational programme he will consider substantial Government financial assistance in order to clear off the debts of teaching orders and to enable them to develop and expand their teaching activities.

I am satisfied that the various existing and proposed new schemes of grants will enable secondary school authorities to meet all their commitments in relation to these schools.

The Minister does agree that there are many cases of very great merit?

There are, but, as I have said, the schemes in existence and those on the way will help considerably and eventually will enable these schools to clear off their existing debt.

That is a very good thing.
