Vol. 139 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answer. - Cork Orthopaedic Hospital.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has satisfied himself that satisfactory progress is being made in the construction of the orthopaedic hospital at Gurranebraher, Cork; and, further, if it will be completed on the appointed date, and whether, in view of the large numbers awaiting treatment and the difficulties under which cases are at present being treated, he will endeavour to have part of this hospital occupied at an early date and there by ease the present position.

As the Deputy is aware, a number of difficulties have arisen in connection with the carrying out of this contract. These difficulties have, in the main, been overcome and I am hopeful that the hospital will be completed on the appointed date. I fully appreciate the present difficulties in regard to the treating of orthopaedic patients in Cork and it is much to the credit of all concerned that so much good work is being done despite these difficulties. I share the Deputy's anxiety that the new hospital should be in operation as early as possible, but I am advised that it would not be feasible to bring part of the hospital into operation before the completion date. I am, however, keeping this position under review and if it should prove to be possible it will certainly be done.
