Vol. 139 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answer. - Courses for Health Inspectors.

asked the Minister for Health if, in view of the fact that a training course for health inspectors is to commence next October in Dublin, under the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee, at the request of his Department and the fee for the course will be £30 per annum, or £10 for those resident in Dublin since 1st September last, he will request the City of Cork Vocational Education Committee and other committees where the facilities are available to undertake similar courses, so as to enable pupils from those areas to undergo the course without the expense of higher fees and maintenancein Dublin for a period of two years.

The decision to ask the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee to hold a two years' course of training for persons seeking a qualification for appointment to health inspector posts was arrived at after careful consideration of all the relevant factors. This initial course is necessarily experimental, and in the light of the experience obtained as a result of it, I intend to consider the feasibility of enabling other vocational education committees who possess the necessary facilities to conduct similar courses of training subsequently, should sufficient vacant health inspector posts exist or be in prospect to absorb the number of students likely to qualify.
