Vol. 139 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retired Road Workers' Superannuation.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that there exists grave dissatisfaction amongst retired road workers in South Tipperary owing to the refusal of the local authority to grant them superannuation for the reason that they had not a sufficient number of working weeks to their credit at retiral; and, if so, whether, in view of the grave hardship being suffered by these men and also of the fact that the low number of working weeks recorded by them is in part due to the great reduction made in road work by the local authority during the emergency and also in harvest seasons, he will take steps, if necessary by the introduction of proposals for legislation, to reduce the qualifying period by an appropriate amount to cover the loss of time during the emergency period and at harvest periods.

I am not so aware. I do not propose to introduce legislation on the lines suggested.
