Vol. 140 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if and when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Johnstown-Arklow Rock area of County Wicklow.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the results of a local canvass of the householders in this area are at present under examination, with a view to having an official canvass of the area carried out. I am not in a position to state when development of the area is likely to take place.

Would the Minister impress on the E.S.B. the fact that there has recently been erected in this locality a parish hall, in which it might be possible to establish some industry or other, if electricity were laid on, and that, before any industry can be considered there, it is essential that such supply should be made available?

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state if the rural electrification scheme will be extended to the Ballymoe and Glinsk area, County Galway; and, if so, when it is expected that work will commence.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Ballymoe and Glinsk areas have been selected for development under the scheme. The erection of the network is expected to commence in Glinsk area early in July and to proceed until Ballymoe area is completed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state if it is intended to extend the rural electrification scheme to the Annaghdown and Corradulla area, County Galway; and, if so, when it is proposed to commence work.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Annaghdown area, which includes Corradulla, has been selected for development under the scheme and that the erection of the network in the area is expected to commence early next month.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to extend the rural electrification scheme to the Leugh and Ballycahill districts, Thurles, County Tipperary.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Ballycahill area which includes Leugh has been considered by the board on a number of occasions for development under the rural electrification scheme, but has not so far been selected as its financial returns do not compare favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Portlaoighise district. The area will again be considered in the future, but I am unable to state when development is likely to take place.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what progress has been made concerning the extending of the rural electrification scheme to the townlands of Grange and Derryvale, Roscrea, County Tipperary.

With regard to Derryvale, I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a similar question on 23rd June, to which I have at present nothing to add.

As regards Grange, I am informed by the E.S.B. that it is not at present possible to say when supply will be made available to this townland.
