Vol. 140 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Restoration of Motor Licences.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the names and addresses of persons whose motor driving licences have been restored to them before the period of suspension imposed by the courts had expired since 1951.

The particulars asked for were published in each case at the time in Iris Oifigiúilto which I would refer the Deputy.

Will the Minister consider giving the grounds on whichthe remission was given in each case, the basis on which he operated the Act?

Mr. Boland

It would take me a long time to do that. If the Deputy raised that on my Estimate I would have more time to do it. He will recollect that when he got that passed in the Act I did not think well of it. At the same time, now that it has come into operation I find that there has been a necessity for it.

Is the Minister aware that when the section was being introduced in the House the then Minister for Justice said it was a power he should have but which, in his opinion, should rarely if ever be exercised?

Mr. Boland

I am aware of that. That was the spirit in which I approached the matter. Because of the fact that I pressed the then Minister to insist on publication, I never remit one of these without due regard to the fact that it will appear in Iris Oifigiúiland other papers.
