Vol. 140 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Offaly Bog.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have considered taking over some 600 acres of bog at Bloomhill, Athlone, County Offaly, on the Williams estate, and carrying out drainage and improvement work for tenants who are willing to repay the cost over a reasonable number of years and, if so, with what result; and further if the Land Commission will obtain a report from the land project section of the Department of Agriculture on the matter at an early date.

The answer to both parts of the question is in the negative. It is not a function of the Land Commission to acquire bogs and then engage in their development for the production of potatoes and other crops, as the Deputy appears to have in mind.
