Vol. 140 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Market for Flax.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate the steps taken by his Department to find a market outside this country for the Twenty-Six County flax crop and the results achieved.

Mr. Walsh

Our missions abroad have been informed of the situation and urged to find markets for flax. Córas Tráchtála Teoranta has investigated the possibility of sales in America, but without result.

Provision for flax has been made, where possible, in trade agreements, but no trade has resulted.

There was a small exhibition of our flax at the recent Frankfurt Fair in Germany, but no firm inquiries resulted. Numerous samples of flax and tow have been sent abroad to possible customers and agents. In view of this experience it must be concluded thatthe likelihood of disposing of any substantial quantities of our flax abroad is very remote.
