Vol. 141 No. 1

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution of Dublin River.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that some form of substance is being discharged into the Camac River, Inchicore, and is causing a very offensive smell; and, if so, if he will have the matter investigated with a view to having the substance disposed of in some other way and so prevent the pollution of this river which is the cause of frequent complaints and is a danger to public health.

I am not so aware. The results of fairly recent investigations by the sanitary authority show that while trade effluents cause some pollution of the river water, the best practicablemeans to reduce the pollution appear to be used by the interests involved.

Is the Minister aware that this river passes in between two hospitals? I am able to say that the authorities of one of the hospitals are concerned about the smell that rises from the particular river. I was there myself no later than a few weeks ago and I can say the smell is very, very offensive.

My Department was made aware of certain complaints regarding pollution of these waters. As a result of the representations we received from the engineers and the medical officer and as a result of consultations with the interested parties we were satisfied that the only practical means possible were being taken to meet the complaint. I think that is far as anybody can go.

It is a very, very offensive little river.
