Vol. 141 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Meath Resettlement.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state in relation to County Meath (1) the estates or lands taken over by the Land Commission for division to the nearest available date, (2) the number of local persons accommodated as (a) uneconomic holders, and (b) landless persons getting a full holding on each estate and the year of division, (3) the numberof migrants accommodated by new holdings on transfer (a) within the County Meath and (b) from other counties, on each estate and the year of division and (4) the total area of land (a) allotted to local persons, and (b) allotted to migrants from other counties.

All the information sought in the question is not readily available and it would involve considerable time and expense, which I feel would not be justified, to ascertain the precise details required. Perhaps the following particulars will meet the Deputy's requirements. From 1923 to 31st March last, the Land Commission took possession of 101,578 acres on 683 estates and holdings in County Meath. In the same period they allotted 26,680 acres for the enlargement of 2,201 small holdings in the county and utilised 74,030 acres for the creation of 3,560 new holdings, accommodation plots, etc. Of the latter area, 19,200 acres were allotted to 479 migrants from other counties and the balance of 54,830 acres was allotted to local people. Allotments by the way of exchange were made to local persons who surrendered 264 holdings within the county. Particulars of the areas allotted each year are set out in the annual reports of the Land Commissioners.
