Vol. 141 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Resale.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the total loss on the resale of lands to migrants and allottees for the years 1949-50, 1950-51 and 1951-52; the loss on resale of the average standard migrant's holding in Leinster and the average total cost of improvement of such a holding, including the cost of the house and offices, fences and water supply.

Losses on resale of lands to migrants and other allottees have been computed by calendar years and they amounted to £42,866, £79,789 and £46,634 for the years 1950, 1951 and 1952, respectively. The percentage loss on resale for these three years was 27.7 per cent., and for the period 1923 to 31st December, 1949, was 3.93 per cent. of the total purchase prices. The information sought in the latter part of the question has not been statistically recorded.

Surely the Minister could give the approximate figure for the loss on resale on the average standard migrant's holding—that would be including cost of improvements, as that charge is fairly uniform in all cases?

Actual figures for the different classes of allottees are not available, as the purchase price of estates and general improvements costs are not readily apportionable betweenthe different allottees. It would involve considerable inspectorate and clerical work to compute and record the information sought. I received this question yesterday.
