Vol. 141 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Laoighis Council Houses.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will hold an inquiry into the delay and failure of the Laoighis County Council to repair their houses at the Swan, Wolfhill, Athy, County Laoighis, where on numerous occasions the tenants petitioned the council to repair the houses without success; and if he will ascertain the reasons why the houses are allowed to fall into a serious state of decay.

I understand that a contract for the repair of the cottages in question has been made by the Laoighis County Council, and that the delay is due to the fact that the contractor had a large volume of other work on hands. I am informed, however, that the council have obtained an assurance from the contractor that he will start work on the cottages within the next ten days.

I also understand that the houses in question, which were erected during the years 1938 and 1939, are in reasonably good condition and that the repairs to be carried out are required mainly to protect the houses againstdampness to which they are liable owing to their exposed position.
