Vol. 142 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Forestry Workers.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that forestry workers employed in the Killarney area are obliged to have their meals on bleak mountains and that they have no shelters to go to when it rains; and, if so, if he will now arrange to have shelters provided for the workers in this area.

This matter has been the subject of recent examination and steps are being taken to provide improved shelter facilities.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that some forestry workers in the Killarney area are compelled to travel four to five miles to their place of employment while there is work within half a mile of their homes; and, if so, if he will now arrange that forestry employees will be delegated to plantations as near as possible to their homes.

Every effort is made to ensure that forestry workers at all forests are employed as near as possible to their homes having regard to the suitability of the individual workman to the particular operations in progress. At Killarney forest the majority of the men currently employed live near a property where work is spasmodic and is not sufficient to absorb all those living in the vicinity.
