Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trade with Russia.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will give complete details of our trading with Russia, state whether the official trade correspondence between the Republic and Russia is carried out through the Irish Embassy in London, and say what future transaction, if any, the Government is committed to with Russia.

As regards the first part of the question, imports from Russia in recent years were as follows:

1950

£18,376

1951

£174,046

1952

£60,279

1953 (January-August)

£118,942

Apart from some small quantities of skins and furs, these imports consisted entirely of timber. There were no exports or re-exports.

As regards the rest of the question, there has been no official trade correspondence with Russia, nor have the Government any trade commitments with that country.
