Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New Irish Citizens.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of aliens who became Irish citizens since 1st June, 1951, giving details of who they are, their former nationality and their business in the Republic.

Mr. Boland

During the period from 1st June, 1951, to date the number of aliens naturalised as Irish citizens was 312. Of these, 133 were British, 37 German, 27 Polish, 12 Italians and the remainder nationals of 17 other countries. The name and address of every person to whom a certificate of naturalisation was granted was published in Iris Oifigiúilafter issue in each case in accordance with the provisions of sub-section (5) of Section 8 of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, 1935, and I am not satisfied that any useful purpose would be served by supplying the additional information asked for.

May I ask the Minister if it is a new procedure in his office that, in the event of an alien applying for citizenship, his name, together with those of others, is forwarded on a list to Fianna Fáil headquarters and that an officer of the Fianna Fáil organisation then calls on him and tells him that his application will be expedited if he gives a subscription to the organisation?

Mr. Boland

Was it the Deputy or Deputy Dillon who invented that question?

The Minister knows it very well and I know that the Fianna Fáil organisation got money from these aliens.

Mr. Boland

What did the three judges say about the Deputy?

And it can be fully proved.
