Vol. 142 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Jurors.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider the introduction of proposals for legislation to pay jurors for their services.

asked the Minister for Justice if any decision has yet been reached concerning the payment of expenses to jurors in this country.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to answer Questions Nos. 37 and 38 together.

The question of making payments in connection with jury service is being considered, but I am not yet in a position to announce the decision.

The Minister may have noticed recently the Northern Ireland Government have decided to pay jurors the expenses they have been seeking for some time. As this question has been under consideration here for a long time, would the Minister not consider making the necessary Order and putting the jurors of Southern Ireland on the same footing as those of Northern Ireland?

Mr. Boland

The whole matter is being considered.

The 26 Counties and the Six Counties.
