Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imposition of Duties.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of new duties imposed since the beginning of 1953 and the commodities to which they relate.

Since the 1st January, 1953, six duties were imposed. The commodities were:—Cotton tapes, root crop knives, hexagonal mesh netting, iron and steel wire (single, stranded and barbed), single cotton yarns, injection solutions.

The scope of ten existing duties was amended to cover the following commodities—Chemically proofed tarpaulins, certain artificial silk piece goods, sanitary wear (napkins), cotton ply yarns, certain iron and steel bars and sections, certain unprinted paper, handbags, purses, etc., made from artificial plastic material, electric wire and cable insulated with artificial plastic material, certain spectacle frames, toilet paper.

Rates of duty were increased on the following commodities:—Sheet and plate-glass, delph and chinaware.
