Vol. 142 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Annual Rainfall.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average annual rainfall in Ireland and whether he can confirm that the average annual rainfalls for Denmark and Holland are 22.2 in. and 35.4 in., respectively.

In calculating the average annual rainfall in this country it is considered necessary, having regard to fluctuations from year to year, to take an appreciable period of years to obtain a fairly stable figure. A period of 35 years has been adopted in this country. The figure for the period 1916 to 1950 is at present being calculated and indications are that it will be about 43.2 in.

According to the information available to me, corresponding figures for Denmark and Holland for the same period are about 24.7 in. and 27.9 in., respectively.

Would the Minister take steps to communicate these relevant facts to some of the agricultural cranks which infest the ranks of his organisation?
