Vol. 142 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Steamship Service to Continent.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the desirability of a direct passenger steamship service between Ireland and the Continent during the tourist season to facilitate continental tourists; and, if so, whether he will take steps to encourage An Bord Fáilte or some other body to provide a suitable service between this country and some port on the Continent.

I would welcome the development of a direct passenger shipping service between Irish and continental ports. The operation of such a service is, however, a highly-specialised business and is not, in my opinion, a matter for An Bord Fáilte but rather for a commercial shipping concern.
