Vol. 143 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oats Shortage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether there is likely to be a shortage of oats this year; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

Mr. Walsh

It is probable that the total quantity of oats marketed from the 1953 harvest will be inadequate to meet requirements until oats from the 1954 harvest are available. If so, the importation of oats will be licensed to whatever extent may be considered necessary to make good the deficit. Licences have already been granted for the import of a limited quantity of seed oats.

I would like to make it clear that imports of oats which would prejudice the disposal of home-grown oats will not be permitted and that users of oats will be expected to obtain their requirements from home supplies to whatever extent these may be available.

Could the Minister indicate where the oats will be imported from?

Mr. Walsh

I have no idea.

From White Russia.
