Vol. 143 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Diplomatic Representatives Abroad.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state whether any of the representatives of the Republic abroad have reached the age limit for retirement; and, if so, if he will state the reasons why retirement has not been effected and the special circumstances in which the age limit has been extended.

The service of one officer has been extended beyond the normal retiring age. He is being retained because of his particular value in the post occupied by him.

Might I ask whether another officer representing the Republic abroad will reach the retiring age before the end of the year and whether the Government are at present considering extending the retiring age in his case also?

That is a separate question.

Might I further ask whether consideration is going to be given to extending the age limit of our representatives abroad when they reach the retiring age? Why not retire them and give somebody else the position?

That is a separate question.
