Vol. 143 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imprisonment of Mid-Tyrone M.P.

asked the Taoiseach if his attention has been drawn to the arrest and imprisonment of Mr. Liam Kelly, the elected representative of the people of Mid-Tyrone, and if he proposes to make a statement to the House in regard to the matter.

I am aware of the facts referred to in the Deputy's question. I do not think it advisable that I should make a statement.

Surely the Taoiseach is not going to permit this outrage to continue without making a protest to the responsible authorities?

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware that Mr. William Kelly, the elected representative for Mid-Tyrone in the Six-County Parliament, has been arrested in his constituency for the alleged sedition of expressing his views as to the best method of ending the partition of our country; and, if so, if he will state what steps he proposes taking to secure the release of Mr. Kelly.

I do not see what effective steps I can take.

Is the Taoiseach aware that steps are now being taken to recover the body of a patriot for this country, namely, the body of Sir Roger Casement? Are we going to allow this elected representative of the people of Mid-Tyrone to remain in prison without making some protest against his imprisonment?

Might I ask theTaoiseach what objection he has to making a protest on behalf of the Irish people in this matter?

The House knows that I understand the situation and that on every occasion on which anything effective could be done I have done it.

Are we to take it that nothing effective can be done now?

Deputies know that whenever anything effective could be done I have done it.

Mr. Brennan

Why not seek to revoke the 1925 Agreement?

And the Ireland Act.
