Vol. 143 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labelling of Food Containers.

asked the Minister for Health if he will consider the introduction of proposals for legislation to make it compulsory on all manufacturers and packers of food and drink to have the contents of their containers labelled thereon on the lines of the British Labelling of Food Order.

Section 56 of the Health Act, 1947, enables the Minister for Health to make regulations prescribing standards for the composition of foods of special importance to the public health. Regulations under the section may contain provisions for the labelling or description of such foods. I am having the matter examined with special reference to particular foods in respect of which evidence is forthcoming as to potential danger to public health. I do not at present propose to seek authority to extend the existing legislative provisions.
