Vol. 143 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - River Shannon Bridges.

andGeneral MacEoinasked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that considerable apprehension has been caused to those interested in the development of the River Shannon as the great water-way of the country by reports to the effect that swivel bridges are about to be replaced by fixed bridges; and whether he will give an assurance that no such change will receive the approval of his Department.

The only proposal for a bridge over the Shannon which is in an advanced stage at present is that for the reconstruction of Athlone Bridge. The proposal of the Westmeath County Council in this connection was the subject of a public local inquiry in accordance with Part IV of the Local Government Act, 1946, and ample opportunity was afforded to interested parties toexpress their views on the matter. As I intimated in my closing speech on the Estimate for my Department, the evidence adduced at the inquiry did not warrant the provision of an opening span and the Westmeath County Council have been advised accordingly. The council are willing to proceed with the erection of a fixed bridge. The assurance sought by the Deputy could not be given unless it were established that the extra cost of providing an opening bridge would be justified.

The Offaly County Council have applied for a Bridge Order for the reconstruction of Banagher Bridge over the River Shannon and have been asked for a preliminary report on the proposal under Section 46 of the Local Government Act, 1946. The application will receive further consideration on receipt of this report but no decision has yet been taken on the type of bridge to be erected.
