Vol. 143 No. 9

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: No. 8 (Votes 60 and 3). Private Deputies' business will be taken at 9 o'clock.

Has any arrangement been made about sittings next week?

There have been some discussions as to the hours of meeting next week. The Dáil will not meet on Tuesday, which is a Church holyday. We hope to get agreement to make up for the loss of hours.

The House is meeting at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday?

Is it proposed to sit on Friday of next week?

Probably, yes.

Is it proposed to sit on Friday afternoon?

Yes. The Dáil will not meet on Tuesday.

Is it intended to adjourn next week.

The hope is there but the prospect is not. I should think we would be of one mind that we must not prolong the session beyond the 18th December. Probably it will be possible to dispose of the essential business before that date.

Did I understand the Tánaiste to say that it is not proposed to prolong the session beyond the 18th December?

There will be agreement that we should try not to go beyond the 18th December.

The agreement will have to come from the Government side of the House because the business that the Tánaiste, through the Parliamentary Secretary to the Taoiseach, has given us would require until Christmas, 1954, to complete, much less this Christmas.

That is too pessimistic a viewpoint.

I will compromise and say, Easter, 1954, instead of Christmas.

Will the Tánaiste say what resumption date the Government have in mind?

We have not decided that yet.
