Vol. 143 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of River Inny.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the river from Sonna to the River Inny via Rathmills is causing flooding to a wide area and that many farmers are unable to carry out any improvement works under the land rehabilitation project owing to the condition of the Inny and its tributaries; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have nothing to add to the reply which I gave on the 18th November last to a similar question about the River Inny catchment area.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that there are two small rivers of great length in that area which have not been opened and that the Inny is deep enough to take the water from these particular rivers? Is he aware that the rehabilitation of land and the fertilisation and liming of over 5,000 acres is held up because these two rivers are not opened?

It has been arranged to carry out the drainage of the Inny on a comprehensive basis, consequently we cannot undertake any piecemeal work on it.
