Vol. 143 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition and Division of Land.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that there is still considerable congestion in the area around Curryaun, Swinford, County Mayo; and, if so, if he will request the Land Commission to reconsider their decision not to migrate any more tenants from the area.

Proposals for relief of congestion and rearrangement of holdings at Curryaun are well advanced. Altogether six tenants have been migrated from this townland, one holding has been resumed and another is in course of resumption. A scheme for the rearrangement and enlargement of the remaining holdings has been prepared and I expect that it will be operated quickly. In these circumstances, and having regard to the competing claims of other congested areas awaiting resale, the Land Commission cannot see their way to migrate further tenants from Curryaun.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the Douglas lands at Grangeclare West, Robertstown, County Kildare; and, if so, when the lands will be divided.

An objection by the owner to the acquisition of these lands was heard by the commissioners in October, 1953, and was allowed. Acquisition proceedings have, therefore, been discontinued.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the Ashe estate at Narraghmore, Athy, County Kildare; and, if so, when the lands will be divided.

The proceedings for the acquisition of this estate have not yet been completed—the outstanding question is one of price which is at present before the appeal tribunal.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the Osborne lands at Bishoplane, Ballymore Eustace, County Kildare; and, if so, when the lands are likely to be divided.

Acquisition proceedings in respect of these lands are well advanced but it is not possible at this stage to say whether or when they will be completed.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet acquired the Murphy lands at Thomastown, Enfield, County Kildare; and, if so, when the lands are likely to be divided.

I have nothing to add to the reply given to a very similar question regarding this estate on the 5th August of this year.

Will the Minister say what the reply was on the 5th August?

The reply then was that proceedings were instituted for the acquisition of these lands but were subsequently discontinued. That is still the position.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the Cope lands at Coolrake, Moone, County Kildare.

The lands referred to have recently changed hands and the Land Commission are not now instituting acquisition proceedings.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have yet completed the resumption proceedings in the case of Patrick and Matthew Egan (now Peter Cosgrave) estate, Cloughbrack, Record No. S.20452, County Galway; and, if not, if he will state the present position in the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the progress which has been made by the Land Commission for the resumption of theestate of Robert and Michael Higgins, at Kilclooney, Record No. S.8944, County Galway.

As the reply is in common form, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to deal with Questions Nos. 52 and 48 together. The price of each of these estates has been fixed by the Land Commission and the owners have appealed against it. The appeals are awaiting hearing by the appeal tribunal.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present position in regard to the resumption of the estate of Miss Eileen Creaven, Cloughanower, Record No. S.7874, County Galway.

Proceedings have been initiated for the acquisition of these lands, but an objection by the owner is pending for hearing.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have under consideration the propriety of acquiring the lands on the Close estate at Turloughmore, County Galway.

The Land Commission, having fully considered the matter, have decided not to institute proceedings for the acquisition of these lands.

I wonder if the Land Commission are aware that these lands are about to be sold by public auction and, in view of the fact that these are the only lands in that district suitable for acquisition for the relief of congestion, will the Minister ask the Land Commission to change their minds about them?

The matter already has been the subject of pretty full consideration. If there are any new factors in the matter, I would be glad if the Deputy would communicate them to me.

The new factor is that the lands are about to be sold by public auction.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the present positionin regard to the Mullins lands at Annaghmore, Mountbellew, County Galway.

Possession of the estate has been taken but allotment of the lands has been postponed pending the outcome of Land Commission proceedings in regard to other lands in the area.
