Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state (a) the number of persons who have been convicted of driving while drunk since 13th June, 1951; (b) the number of persons who having been so convicted were sentenced to imprisonment; (c) the number of cases in which he remitted the sentence or any part thereof, and (d) in each case in which he remitted a sentence the duration of the sentence imposed by the court and whether any alternative penalty was substituted; and, if so, what alternative penalty.

From 13th June, 1951, to 31st January, 1954, 581 persons were convicted of driving while drunk of whom 83 were sentenced to terms of imprisonment. Of these 83 cases the prison sentence was mitigated to a fine in eight cases and in seven others portions of the sentences were remitted.

A statement will be circulated for publication in the Official Report showing the duration of the sentences in cases in which mitigation was granted and the degree of mitigation in each case.
