Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Statistics.

Mr. O'Higgins

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state (a) the estimated yearly consumption of butter in the Republic, (b) the present estimated yearly production of Irish creamery butter, and (c) the amount of butter proposed to be imported in the coming year.

The answer to the Deputy's question is:—

(a) The figure for 1953 was about 1,043,000 cwt., comprising creamery butter, farmers' butter and imported butter.

(b) Subject to final adjustment, the figure for the year 1953 was 703,300 cwt.

(c) I would refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to a question asked by Deputy P. O'Reilly on this subject on 2nd December, 1953.
