Vol. 145 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether it is proposed to give increases in ration allowances and marriage allowances to N.C.O.s and men of the Army in the near future.

The allowance in lieu of rations issuable to certain soldiers of the forces is based on the cost to my Department of purchasing foodstuffs for the troops and is reviewed periodically in the light of such cost. The present allowance will again be examined before the 1st July, 1954, and I am unable to say at present what the result will be of such examination.

Marriage allowance is reviewed on each occasion when the pay and allowances of all members of the Defence Forces are under examination. In June, 1953, the pay and marriage allowance of soldiers was increased with effect from the 1st April, 1953. I am unable to say at present whether or when further increases will be granted.
