Vol. 145 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Feale Drainage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the last date on which men were interviewed for employment on the Feale drainage scheme; (2) the number interviewed; (3) how the names were submitted for interview; (4) the class of work available for those interviewed, and (5) the number of men engaged.

(1) Men were last interviewed for employment on the Feale drainage scheme on the 29th and 30th March, 1954; (2) 30 men were interviewed; (3) 18 names were submitted by the local employment exchange and 12 other men presented themselves for interview; (4) the class of work available was as fitter's helpers or greasers; (5) 18 men were engaged.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that there was a complete stoppage of work by the employees of the Feale drainage scheme some time ago on account of the dismissal of three workers; and, if so, if he will now state if it is proposed to have these men reinstated.

The employment of the three men to whom the Deputy refers was terminated as they had become redundant. Their re-employment can be considered only if and when work for which they would be suitable becomes available.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the Kerry County Council agreed at the estimates meeting to increase the weekly wages of its road workers by 5/- per week; and, if so, if he will state if it is proposed to grant a similar increase to the workers employed on the Feale drainage scheme.

I am not aware that any increase in wages has recently been granted to road workers in County Kerry. An increase of 1d. an hour in the wages of labourers employed on drainage schemes, including the Feale, was granted last month and further increases are not at present contemplated.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the quay at Ballyhorgan, Lixnaw, County Kerry, is being removed in connection with the Feale drainage scheme; and, if so, if he will state if it is proposed to have a new quay erected there by his Department in the near future.

The realignment of the river as designed for the purposes of the drainage scheme requires the removal of this quay. I am informed that the quay has not been used for many years and it is not proposed to replace it.
