Vol. 145 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Migration from County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the proposed migrants from the townlands of Tawnylaheen, Shranalee, etc., near Castlebar, County Mayo, will be migrated this spring; and, if not, if he will indicate the reasons for the delay.

Of eight tenants approved for migration from the area in question, three refused in spring, 1953, the holdings offered to them. The other five have been migrated.

The question of carrying out further migrations from the area will be examined.

Is the Minister aware that the Land Commission inspector dealing with these particular cases gave a totally different explanation to the tenants?

The information I have got is that the inspector believed that further migrations would be necessary but no proposals have yet been lodged.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the proposed migrants from the townland of Cregganbaun and neighbouring townlands, Louisburgh, County Mayo, will be migrated this spring; and, if not, why not.

The Land Commission are anxious to migrate a large group of tenants from the district mentioned by the Deputy but they also desire, if possible, to place them in a single new settlement. The difficulty is to find and prepare an area of untenanted land large enough to receive them all.

It may be possible to offer these tenants concrete proposals for exchange later in the year.

Is the Minister aware that the tenants were told that they were to be migrated this spring and that they have suffered considerable loss as a result of the fact that that arrangement has not been carried out?

There has been no change in the policy or the intention of the Land Commission but unfortunately there have been delays for which, I think I can legitimately claim, the officers of the Land Commission are not responsible.
