Vol. 145 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Kerry Bridges.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the present state of the Ferry Bridge at Ballyduff, County Kerry, constitutes a danger to the persons of the local inhabitants and that there is a possibility of its collapsing at any moment with the result that a large section of the community may be prevented from getting to the creamery and carting home turf and other goods; and, if so, if he will now state when it is proposed to commence work on the erection of a new bridge.

The responsibility for proceeding with arrangements for the erection of a new bridge is a matter for the Kerry County Council.

As I indicated in my reply on 24th ultimo to Deputy McEllistrim, the council were recently informed that a Road Fund grant of £18,750, or 75 per cent. of the net cost of the work, whichever is the lesser, is available for this work.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he has allocated, or intends to allocate, from the National Development Fund, a sum sufficient to erect a bridge connecting Valentia Island with the mainland.

The position remains as stated in my reply to a question on the same subject by Deputy Flynn on 10th February last. Consideration of the matter in my Department has been completed, and when the other Departments concerned have been consulted, a decision will issue to the county council.
