Vol. 146 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - New National Schools.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state when work on the new national school at Carraroe, County Galway, will commence.

I am informed by the Commissioners of Public Works that they have invited tenders for the erection of these new schools and that the last date for the receipt of tenders is the 22nd June, 1954. The tenders received will be examined and a contract will be placed as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the cause of the delay in the building of the new schools at Loughconnera, Kilkerrin, Connemara, County Galway, and when it is expected that construction will commence.

I am advised by the Commissioners of Public Works that they placed a contract for the erection of a new school at Loughconnera, County Galway, and that work on the site was commenced towards the end of December last. After a short time, however, work was abandoned. The inclemency of the weather, the necessity for reviewing the type of sanitation to be provided and the illness of the contractor have been among the causes of the suspension of work. The prolonged delay in resuming operations is, however, a matter of concern and steps are being taken with a view to having work on the building of the school resumed at an early date.
