Vol. 146 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Donegal Island Road.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will sanction a grant towards the completion of the accommodation road from the county road in Cruit Island, West Donegal, to Owey Island Sound to facilitate the inhabitants of Owey who for years have had to carry all their goods a distance of one mile across the sands prior to bringing them by boat to the island.

A grant of £260 was expended last year on the repair of the existing accommodation road in Cruit Island, which is now, I am informed, in good condition. The Deputy presumably refers to a proposal to extend this road across Cruit Island to a point opposite Owey Island, known locally as Dooghbeg. An application has been received for the construction of a pier at Dooghbeg to facilitate the Owey Islanders and until a decision is given on the pier proposal it will not be possible to decide whether the proposed road extension will be constructed.
