Vol. 146 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sarsfield Barracks—Married Quarters.

asked the Minister for Defence if his attention has been drawn to the unsatisfactory housing conditions in the married quarters in Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick; if he has any proposals for the erection of new houses for the occupants; and whether, pending the erection of new houses, he will review the present system of rent charges.

I am aware that the soldiers' married quarters at Sarsfield Barracks, Lmerick, do not provide a satisfactory standard of accommodation for the occupants, and the question of effecting some improvements in the quarters is being examined.

I am unable at this stage to state when new married quarters are likely to be built at Sarsfield Barracks, Limerick. The matter is, however, being considered as part of a scheme to improve the housing conditions of married soldiers at the larger military centres.

The current system of charges for existing soldiers' married quarters was introduced on the 1st September, 1953, and I do not at present propose to make any alteration in it.
