Vol. 146 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Board of Works: Hand-won Turf.

Mr. Egan

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is the intention of the Office of Public Works not to take hand-won turf this year, as hitherto, to satisfy their fuel requirements in Dublin City; and, if so, whether, in view of the fact that this decision will very seriously affect a large number of hand-won turf producers, he will have it reviewed.

The use of hand-won turf in establishments in Dublin maintained by the Office of Public Works has for some years past been confined to buildings in which heating is provided by open fires. In view of difficulties experienced in the supply, delivery and storage of adequate quantities of satisfactory hand-won turf, and on grounds of cost, it has been decided to use machine-won turf in open fires during the next heating season. Considerable supplies of hand-won turf will, however, continue to be required for provincial establishments.
