Vol. 146 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Government (Superannuation) Act.

andMr. J. Lynch asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the fact that the employees of the Cork Corporation are obliged to pay contributions towards superannuation pursuant to a judicial decision which appears to be at variance with the intentions of the Oireachtas when enacting the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1948, and having regard to the fact that this Act contains other anomalies, he will introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Act in question at an early date.

Proposals for legislation to amend the Local Government (Superannuation) Act, 1948, are being considered by me. I can assure the Deputies that the position of the employees of the Cork Corporation referred to by them will be carefully examined.

Can the Minister say if it is a fact that it was anticipated in his Department that a Bill to amend the Superannuation Act, 1948 would be ready in May last? Can he say if that Bill is the measure now being considered by him?

I can assure the Deputy that the legislation which I would introduce would not be the legislation of my predecessor.
