Vol. 146 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supplies to National Schools.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is prepared in cases where local authorities bring piped water systems near-by to national schools to provide departmental grants for the installation of water supplies and sewerage amenities in the schools in question.

Where a public water supply is made available by a local authority at or adjacent to the site of a new national school or of an existing vested national school, i.e. a school which is vested by a lease to which the Minister for Education is a party, grants are sanctioned by my Department on the recommendation of the Commissioners of Public Works, towards the cost of the installation of a water supply and also, where practicable, of a water-flushed system of sanitation to serve the school. Grants may be made, however, only in respect of works within the vested site of the school.

It is not open to my Department to allow grants for such purposes in the case of non-vested schools.
