Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification.

Mr. Egan

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state when it is proposed to extend rural electrification to the areas of (1) Belmont, (2) Geashill and (3) Cloneygowan in County Offaly.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the selection of these areas for development under the rural electrification scheme has been considered by the board on a number of occasions but that they have not so far been selected as their returns do not compare favourably with those of other areas still awaiting development in the board's Athlone district. I am unable to say when the development of the areas is likely to take place but I understand that the possibility of supply being extended to them at an early date would be improved if more householders agreed to take the supply.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the delay in carrying through the proposed rural electrification scheme for Milltown, County Kerry, he will make representation to the E.S.B. in the matter.

The selection of areas for development under the rural electrification scheme and the determination of their order of priority are matters solely for the E.S.B. and I have no function. I have, however, made inquiries from the board and I am informed that the Milltown area, County Kerry, has been considered for selection in competition with other areas in the board's Tralee district for development under the rural electrification scheme but has not so far been successful.
