Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Censorship of Publications Acts.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state whether it is proposed to introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Censorship of Publications Acts, 1929 and 1946, in order to deal with the flood of undesirable magazines, Sunday newspapers and comics coming into the country.

I do not propose to introduce legislation to amend the Censorship of Publications Acts. I have no evidence that these Acts are inadequate to enable the board to deal effectively with reading-matter which in their opinion is indecent or obscene. The Acts do not, of course, provide for the prohibition of reading-matter which may be undesirable in the sense of being vulgar, or materialistic, or unsuitable for children, but I doubt if many Deputies, on full consideration of the problem, would support legislation providing for the prohibition of reading-matter merely on these grounds.
