Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Unemployed Men's Association.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Taoiseach if he has seen a statement published in an English newspaper and reported to have been made by a person who was described as secretary of the "Dublin Unemployed Men's Association" to the effect that three members of the Government, viz., the Ministers for Industry and Commerce, Social Welfare and Posts and Telegraphs, were present at a meeting at which a pact was signed with the above named association involving five commitments for the Government, namely (1) reduction of prices, (2) increase of relief pay, (3) abolition of waiting period for assistance, (4) full employment and (5) representation of the association on the Public Works Committee; and if he will state if this report is correct and, if so, whether the Government (a) authorised the Ministers named to enter into the alleged pact and (b) intends to submit to the Dáil proposals to give effect to these undertakings.

Since I received notice of the Deputy's question, I have seen a statement, apparently that referred to by the Deputy, alleging that an agreement was made between a particular Party and an association concerning the matters specified in the question. While, in fact, no commitments were entered into on behalf of the Government with the association referred to or any other body, the Government's declared policy includes the increase of employment, the reduction of the cost of living and the improvement of social welfare benefits. So far as action by the Dáil may be required for the purpose of giving effect to these policies, the necessary measures will be brought before the House at the proper time.

Mr. Lemass

Will the Taoiseach say definitely, one way or the other, was the statement attributed to the secretary of this organisation true or untrue?

I am informed it was untrue.
