Vol. 147 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Commission on Emigration.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Taoiseach if he will state whether the Government have considered the recommendations and suggestions of the Commission on Emigration and Other Population Problems; and, if so, whether he will state what, if any, decisions have been made thereon.

The majority and minority reports of the commission, which were published in July last as soon as all the reports were available, are, in accordance with the normal practice, at present being examined by the various Departments concerned. Owing to the nature of the reports, their detailed examination will necessarily take some time, but there will be no avoidable delay either in the examination of the reports or in the subsequent consideration by the Government of the recommendations and suggestions which they contain.

Mr. Lemass

Can the Taoiseach give any indication when the Government is likely to be in a position to make a statement of policy in this matter?

Surely the Deputy does not expect me to answer that question now?

Mr. Lemass

I do not expect expedition, but I expect information.
