Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Overcrowding.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state whether he has received a report concerning unsatisfactory sanitary conditions and overcrowding in Little Island National Schools, and, if so, if he will take immediate steps to have the present school extended or to have a new one built.

There is sufficient over-all floor space in Little Island National School for the number of children in attendance at present, but there are only two rooms in the building, while there are three teachers on the staff. My Department is advised that the sanitary accommodation is inadequate and unsatisfactory and that the premises are otherwise defective. In all the circumstances it is considered that the proper course to take is to replace the existing school by a new school on a new site and my Department is now initiating action with a view to enabling a new school to be erected.
