Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - East Cork School.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state what progress has been made in the building of the extension to Conna National School, East Cork; and if, in view of the fact that some of the pupils have to be taught in the village hall, which is a half-mile distant from the school, he will take steps to have the work expedited.

A grant has been sanctioned by my Department towards the cost of carrying out a scheme for the enlargement and improvement of Conna National School, County Cork.

The arrangements for the execution of the works are in the hands of the Commissioners of Public Works and I have asked them to expedite the case as far as possible.

I may say, however, that because of the increasingly heavy programme of work involved in connection with the erection of new schools and the enlargement and improvement of existing schools it necessarily takes the commissioners a considerable time to complete the arrangements which have to be made by them subsequent to the sanction of a grant in order to enable contracts to be placed.

Could the Minister state when was the grant made and when was it handed over to the Commissioners of Public Works?

The grant was made in June last.
