Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Afforestation.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the number of acres in North Kerry acquired or proposed to be acquired by the Forestry Branch of his Department for afforestation purposes in the coming year.

The Forestry Division have offers totalling almost 400 acres in North Kerry while my attention was recently directed to other likely substantial areas. Inquiries are already afoot in these last mentioned cases. I would be grateful for any information which would lead to the acquisition of further areas in County Kerry.

Can the Minister say what steps he is taking to acquire land for afforestation purposes in the Lyre-acrompane and Rathea areas?

The Forestry Division has now an area of approximately 350 acres of cut-away bog which is the property of Bord na Móna at the moment. In other words, we are trying to induce Bord na Móna to sell the land and let us have it. In addition, in that area, there is an offer of approximately 100 to 150 acres which is likely to come in.
