Vol. 147 No. 5

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Value of Old Age Pension.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the value of the existing old age pension of 21/6 in terms of 1938 prices.

It is not possible to state the value of the existing old age pension of 21/6 in terms of 1938 prices since an index number appropriate to the class concerned is not available. From the official general index numbers it is estimated that £1 in mid-August, 1954, would have purchased at retail prices the same quantum of goods and services (including rent) as 8/7 at mid-August, 1938.
